Lost Bluegrass: The History of a Vanishing Landscape
Presented by: Ronnie Dreistadt
Ronnie Dreistadt will discuss his book about how the Bluegrass region is defined and what makes Kentucky a place unlike any other. What began as the homeland of native tribes developed into ideal farmland for early settlers. Development continued as the region evolved into the premier breeding grounds for world-famous thoroughbreds, helping to bring the Bluegrass international recognition as the epicenter of American horseracing and equestrian culture. Yet development of the region has never stopped. The rolling hills, limestone fences and legendary horse farms that once defined the landscape continue to vanish as suburban sprawl stretches into the far reaches of the Bluegrass. Ronnie will have photos of the heritage and what can be saved of our Bluegrass. He will have books for sale. Ronnie Dreistadt serves as the Director of Education of Historic Locust Grove. Previously, Dreistadt worked at the Kentucky Derby Museum for 26 years, as well as the author of two books: "Lost Bluegrass: The History of a Vanishing Landscape" and "Wicked Tales from the Kentucky Derby". He lives in Sellersburg, IN with his wife and three children.
