African-American Genealogy Group of Kentucky The African-American Genealogy Group of Kentucky was formed in January 2011 by 11 researchers interested in preserving the history and heritage of Kentucky's African American generations. The group grew out of frustrating exceptions in researching Black history when traditional research methods were roadblocked by slavery. Jim Crow laws not only segregated African Americans in public spaces during a dark time in United States history, but had a similar effect on record-keeping as well. African Americans in historical records could be filed under a plethora of different titles, in the back of books, un-indexed, or simply missing altogether. It was out of these frustrations that the AAGGKY came to be -- the first group of its kind in Kentucky. It officially incorporated in April 2011, and the rest is history.Last Updated: 9 June 2016   [Located in Category: Kentucky & Indiana]

Women felt the desire to express their patriotic feelings and were frustrated by their exclusion from men's organizations formed to perpetuate the memory of ancestors who fought to make this country free and independent. As a result, a group of pioneering women in the nation's capital formed their own organization and the Daughters of the American Revolution has carried the torch of patriotism ever since.Last Updated: 10 June 2016   [Located in Category: National & International]

Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War GravesitesThe SUVCW National Graves Registration Project was established in 1996. Since then, hundreds of dedicated people from within and without our Order have graciously devoted thousands of hours of their time and energy visiting cemeteries, recording, verifying, researching and entering the final resting places of Civil War veterans. From the beginning, one thing was missing - the means for the SUVCW and general public to search and view the results of our labor on the Internet. As the number of registrations grew, it was also apparent that duplication of effort and waste of time was reaching an unacceptable level, without knowledge of what was completed and what needed further investigation. The National Graves Registration Database is now available to all. The database was activated February 22, 2005. This will make all original registrations available for viewing by the general public, as well as allowing for new registrations to be entered through our online program. For the time being, only new graves registrations will be entered through the "submitter" area. Updated or additional information concerning previously submitted registrations should continue to be submitted to the National Graves Registration Officer. Naturally, submissions for those without computer access or preferring not to use this tool will be accepted through regular mail or email by Department Graves Registration Officers or, in their absence, the National Graves Registration Officer.Last Updated: 29 January 2020   [Located in Category: National & International]

The Society of Indiana PioneersIn 1915, the Indiana General Assembly created the Indiana Historical Commission which led the planning, preparation and conduct of the celebration of Indiana's Centennial. Local Centennial committees were organized throughout Indiana. John Hampden Holliday, publisher of The Indianapolis News, was the chairman of the Indianapolis committee. Sometime during the weeks of Centennial celebration, Mr. Holliday came upon the notion of organizing a society composed of people who were descendants of the early settlers of Indiana, the pioneers who opened the State to civilization, thereafter discussing, promoting and planning it with family, friends and acquaintances. On September 15, 1916, Mr. Holliday and a considerable number of people met to hear the report of a planning committee and its presentation of a proposed constitution that was adopted by those attending. In a subsequent order of business Mr. Holliday was elected the first President, a position he held until his death in 1921.Last Updated: 9 June 2016   [Located in Category: Kentucky & Indiana]

Our Public Records $$$https://ourpublicrecords.org/ Any type of record that you can access without submitting an official request is an example of a public record. Many of the records you need for genealogical research are civil records. Those records can include: Marriage licenses Divorce records Census reports The federal government conducts a census once every 10 years. This allows workers to create records that help the government keep track of its citizens. These records go back decades and can help you find out where your family lived. The reports also show you the names of anyone who lived at the same address and both their ages and occupations. You can use those records to see how your family moved from one decade to the next and how their relatives moved at the same time. Birth and death certificates are equally helpful. With birth certificates, you can see when a loved one was born and the names of his or her parents. You may even find an original birth certificate and a second certificate that lists the names of any adoptive parents. Death certificates provide similar information about someone who passed away. A death certificate may even list the individual’s occupation and the cause(s) of death. It’s helpful to look at marriage and divorce records also. Many of these certificates are available online or from government agencies and departments. While marriage records show the names of the married couples and the names of their officiant and witnesses, those records will also show when the marriage occurred and where. You can use divorce records to see when a couple ended their marriage.Last Updated: 16 July 2023   [Located in Category: Educational]
